5 Things To Ask Your Remedial Massage Therapist

Seeing a massage therapist for the first time can be very daunting, particularly if you have never had a massage before. In this blog post, I explore the questions you can ask a remedial massage therapist to ease you mind and reduce concerns prior to your appointment.

  1. What qualifications do you have? Are you a member of a professional association?

I have a Diploma in Remedial Massage, completing my studies through Melbourne Institute of Massage Therapy in Melbourne. I have also completed the Practitioner of Pregnancy Massage  course through Pregnancy Massage Australia.

I am a senior member of the Association of Massage Therapists (AMT) which is a national, not-for-profit association representing qualified Massage Therapists and Massage Therapy Students. As part of my Association membership, I must have public liability and indemnity insurance and Level 2 First Aid certificate.

  1. Can I claim treatment with my private health insurance?

On the spot HICAPS claims are available for Remedial, Pregnancy and Postnatal Massage. Find out more here.

  1. Will you ask for a medical history? What sort of assessments will you do in the initial treatment?

At your first appointment, you will be required to complete a health history form. This will provide me with an understanding of not only your current health situation and massage requirements, but your history of health that may still be having an impact. The more you are willing to share, the more information I will have to be able to help you reach your health goals.

As part of this process, you may be required to perform some range of motion assessments, which helps me to work out where to focus treatment.

  1. What do I wear? Will I be covered with towels during treatment? What clothing will I need to remove?

I recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. Something that you can easily slip in and out of. Keep in mind that your body temperature may drop at the end of your massage, so bring an extra layer or two in cooler months.

During treatment, you will be covered with towels, except for the area that is being treated. If you feel uncomfortable with the draping of towels during the treatment, please let me know.

Underwear must always remain on during a massage, for hygienic reasons. In some cases, you can leave some items of clothing on, for your own comfort.

  1. When can I book?
