Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle treatment that promotes the movement of lymph, fluid that transports white blood cells, oxygen, and nutrients to tissues in the body. Lymph play a vital role in the function of the immune system. This treatment can be used to treat many health concerns.

Danish physicians Emil and Estrid Vodder first developed the practice in the 1930s as a treatment for lymphedema a condition which is characterized by build-up of lymph in the soft tissues. MLD is still used as a primary treatment for lymphedema to this day and can also assist people dealing with other health conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Knee of hip surgery
  • Swelling and fatigue associated with menopause
  • Breast cancer recovery

As MLD stimulates lymph flow throughout the body, it has several benefits, including

  • Enhancing the immune system
  • Providing pain relief
  • Reducing muscle spasms
  • Promoting tissue regeneration and healing

Karen Robertson is a qualified MLD specialist, having studied at the Vodder Academy in Austria.
